Heat pumps with solar panels in Ibiza

In short

A heat pump runs on electricity and solar panels produce it: together, part of the heat pump's consumption comes from your own roof. How much depends on the installed power, the home's consumption and the hours it is used.

Why do heat pumps and solar PV work well together?

A heat pump uses electricity to move heat from the air into the home's water. Solar panels produce electricity. When production and consumption happen at the same time, the home uses its own energy instead of buying it.

When do production and consumption match?

Heat pump useMatch with sunny hours
Summer coolingHigh: heat and solar production arrive together
Hot waterHigh if the cylinder is heated during sunny hours
Winter heatingLower: fewer sunny hours and more demand in the morning and evening
Underfloor heatingIts thermal mass lets part of the consumption shift to sunny hours

That is why it pays to programme the heat pump to work harder when there is production: heating the cylinder at midday or using the thermal mass of the underfloor system.

What do Spain's self-consumption rules say?

Royal Decree 244/2019 regulates electricity self-consumption:

  • Individual or collective self-consumption: one home alone or several sharing the installation.
  • With or without surplus: unused electricity can be fed into the grid.
  • Simplified compensation of surplus for installations up to 100 kW.
  • A national self-consumption register.

The electrical installation is registered by an authorised installer and entered in the corresponding register.

Which grants are there for solar panels?

SchemeWhat it coversMain conditions
Income tax deduction for renewable self-consumption10% in a property you own; 20% in homes in predominantly residential buildingsUp to €5,000 a year, storage included; installation carried out, completed and paid for in 2026; payment by card or transfer
Local IBI and ICIO rebatesThe solar part of the installationDifferent in each municipality: see heat pumps in Ibiza by municipality

How much solar power is needed?

It depends on:

  • The heat pump's consumption, which comes from the home's demand and the unit's efficiency.
  • The rest of the electricity use: kitchen, appliances, pool.
  • The roof's orientation and area.
  • Whether batteries are installed.

Start with the calculator for an indicative heat pump output; at the visit we study the solar PV with your real consumption.

How do we do it?

  1. Joint study of the heat pump and the solar PV, using the home's electricity bills.
  2. Design of the installation: power, panel location and, if worthwhile, batteries.
  3. Programming the heat pump to make the most of production hours.
  4. Registration of both installations and paperwork for the grants.

Frequently asked questions

Can I run only on solar panels?

Not continuously: there is no production at night or on cloudy days, and the home still draws electricity from the grid. Panels reduce the energy you buy; they do not replace it entirely.

How many panels do I need for a heat pump?

It depends on the heat pump's consumption and the rest of the home's, the orientation and the available area. We calculate it in the study. [DATO PENDIENTE: criterios de dimensionado de Climai Group]

Are batteries worth it?

Batteries store daytime surplus for use at night. Whether they pay off depends on night-time consumption and the battery's cost; we assess it case by case.

What happens to the electricity I do not use?

With surplus self-consumption it can be fed into the grid. Royal Decree 244/2019 provides a simplified compensation mechanism for installations up to 100 kW.

Is there an income tax deduction for solar panels?

Since 2026 there is a renewable self-consumption deduction: 10% or 20% depending on the type of property, on up to €5,000 a year, for installations carried out, completed and paid for in 2026. Check with your tax adviser.

Do I get an IBI or ICIO rebate for the panels?

In Ibiza, the current local rebates are precisely for solar energy, with different conditions in each municipality. A heat pump on its own does not qualify today.

Can I add solar PV to an existing heat pump?

Yes. The panels connect to the home's electrical installation; the heat pump uses the production without changes to the water circuit. Some heat pumps can also adapt their operation to solar production.
